Mass air flow sensor is used to measure the quantity or mass of air coming from the atmosphere and supplied to the engine intake manifold.
Mass air flow sensor is vital component for the performance of the engine. The mass of air increases power output of the engine. This sensor measures the mass of air which is going to burn inside the engine. According to the mass of air inside the engine intake manifold, fuel is supplied to the engine. This makes complete combustion of mixture and increases power output, reduces fuel wastage and increases efficiency of the engine.
In engine, the temperature and pressure inside the combustion chamber changes continuously. The pressure and temperature is directly proportional to the density of air. So changes in the pressure and temperature of air also changes the density of air. So it is necessary to maintain the mass of air. This is done with the help of mass air flow sensor.
Mass air flow sensor uses electrical current to measure the mass airflow. For this, platinum wire is used at a temperature higher than atmospheric air that is coming inside the engine. When air enters into the engine manifold, it passes over the platinum wire and makes it cool. For platinum wire, it is necessary to remain hot and so it needs more current. This current is directly proportional to the mass of air.
