Definition:
Magnetic pick-up is a coil, with sensor, and a replacement of mechanical contact breakers, used to produce spark as per the firing order.
Requirement:
It is required in modern electronic ignition system to maintain accurate firing orders in all the cylinders.
Function:
Modern cars are now equipped with a distributor consisting of a magnetic pick-up coil with a sensor mounted on the distributor rotor shaft. The coil, consists of small openings or windows according to the number of cylinders of the engine. When the rotor surrounded by stationary magnets rotates, a magnetic field is generated, which is sensed by the sensor as the coil opening and the magnet face each other. This generates a signal, inside the sensor which is used to trigger the ECU for producing the spark in respective cylinder.
